GHACEM CEMENT FOUNDATION PLEDGES MORE SUPPORT TOWARDS HEALTH AND EDUCATION AS IT HOLDS 2022/2023 DONATION

Ghacem Ltd has honored its pledge of supporting deprived communities in the country with free cement bags for their health and educational infrastructure by holding the Ghacem Cement Foundation donation ceremonies for the year 2022/2023.

Established in 2002 as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) to assist deprived communities in improving their health and educational infrastructure, the foundation annually gives cement to institutions across the country grouped into Southern (Central, Western, Western North, Volta, Oti, Eastern and Greater Accra Region) and Northern (Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Bono East, Bono, Ahafo and Ashanti Region) sectors as a support package for the institutions which are currently undertaken various infrastructural projects.

The foundation has since its inception donated a total of 675,000 bags of cement valued at a cost of Ghc 52 million. This year the Secretariat budgeted over 17,450 bags with beneficiaries in the Southern sector receiving 9,470 bags while the Northern sector beneficiaries were presented with 7,980 bags.

Southern Sector donation

Held in Takoradi on 11th August 2023 at the Best Western Atlantic Hotel, representatives of beneficiary institutions of the selected health and educational facilities gathered to receive the cement allocation chit.

Addressing the event, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Paramount Chief of Assin Kushea of the Owirenkyi Traditional area and Chairman of the foundation was confident that these donations to the schools and hospitals will improve their various projects to spur development in the country.

He informed that the Foundation now aims to assist special projects that need special attention as such a total of 3,000 bags will be donated to assist a special project, ‘the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital children’s cancer unit building project’. “The Council will continue to assist the project till its completion”, he assured.

Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI urged the beneficiaries to use the cement for its intended purpose informing them that the foundation will carry out a post-donation visit to check and also encourage beneficiaries to re-apply if the need in order for them to finish their projects. 

He therefore implored beneficiaries, past and present to use the Ghacem cement products always as they also contribute to the success of the Ghacem Cement Foundation.

In his address, Mr. Eric Appiah Odoom, Works Manager-Takoradi who represented the Managing Director of Ghacem, Mr. Stefano Gallini said the company was proud to give back to communities through the Ghacem Cement Foundation for more than two decades.

He said the company whilst consuming natural resources during the production of cement is concerned about sustainable development and as such has produced different cement products in its long-term vision of having a sustainable cement production.

“In doing all this we are also mindful of our environment hence our conscious effort to the reduction of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in both our Tema and Takoradi plants during production. We have a goal that we need to meet in 2030 so while others are just taking the clinker adding 90%, not doing any innovation to it we are finding alternative means of doing it, grinding it very fine.

Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo, a Council member for the Foundation said the GCF Council members work tirelessly through the numerous applications to select beneficiaries all in a bid to ensure health and educational infrastructure in the country is improved to augment the Government’s efforts as such, she urged the beneficiaries to use the cement for its intended purpose and continue to patronize Ghacem cement to sustain the company and in the long run the Foundation.

 

Northern Sector event

Over 162 beneficiaries from the Northern part of the country gathered at the Mariam Hotel in Tamale to receive cement allocation chit for the various health and education projects. Also present were members of the Ghacem Distributors Association, Northern Region led by the Chairman, Alhaji Abdul Razak Yahaya who were on hand to endorse the impact of the Foundation on their market activities.

Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Chairman of the foundation said the Foundation was happy to witness the increasing rate of application and described the applicants as good partners supporting Ghacem to give its quota to develop Ghana.

He urged all present and the nation to continue to patronize the Ghacem cement for the company to get the strength to do more for Ghana. “Although Ghacem as a manufacturer of cement pays its taxes and duties it still takes delight in allocating free bags of cement to support health and education and has done so since 2002 giving over 675,000 bags valued at Ghc 52 million. It is our hope to continue to do this as long as we continue to have a level playing field in the industry whilst producing cement”.

Mode of Application

Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI therefore seized the opportunity to brief the gathering on the mode of application: Two (2) types of application exist: To rehabilitate an existing structure that needs work to be done and for new structures the community has reached lintel level that needs support.

The procedure includes an original application letter from the Head of the Institution (The Head Teacher/Master, Doctor-in Charge or Medical Assistant/Administration, and Head Midwife). A Letter from the District Director of Education or Health. A Letter from the DCE or any Senior Government Official or Chairman of the Town Development Council or head of a religious institution. Two pictures of existing structures to be rehabilitated to be endorsed by the Director of Education/ Health and add the expected completion time for the project after the cement has been donated. Applicants are to apply for one project at a time.

Endorsing the Cement Foundation, Chairman of Ghacem Distributors Association, Northern Region, Alhaji Abdul Razak Yahaya said as distributors they take pride in being associated with activities of the Foundation and therefore called on all patrons to remain loyal to the Ghacem brand reiterating that every Ghacem product they buy goes to support a school or a hospital.

2023/2024 Applications opened

Mr. Frank Antwi Agyapong, Head of the Ghacem Cement Foundation Secretariat who doubles as the Lead, Marketing & PR of Ghacem in an interview re-emphasized that the secretariat takes the applications in high esteem and was happy with the numerous applications received for 2022/2023. “We even expect more applications going forward in all the regions to spread development in the country”.

Mr. Agyapong seized the opportunity to announce the opening of the GCF 2023/2024 applications calling on all to apply early and also become ambassadors partnering with Ghacem to support health and educational infrastructure in the country.

Some of the representatives of beneficiary Institutions who spoke to the Press commended Ghacem for sustaining the GCF over the years reiterating that depending on the Government alone for education and health infrastructure will delay development hence corporate entities such as Ghacem deserve to be emulated.
